Story Highlights Terrafugia Transition struts its stuff It goes from car to plane on the runway at the big experimental air show But when will it be mass produced?

If you're going to show off your flying car to keep enthusiasm for the idea going, you'd be hard pressed to find a better place than the EAA AirVenture fly-in in Oshkosh, Wis.

Terrafugia's Transition "roadable" aircraft is taking test flights this week at the show, demonstrating how it goes from a completely drivable vehicle for highways, then unfolding its wings and taking to the clear Wisconsin skies.

Oshkosh has become Mecca for private experimental aviation enthusiasts, with many flying in from around the country to be there. The displays fill fields with everything, basically, that can fly -- making a flying car not all that odd, really.

Out of several ideas for flying cars, the Transition is the idea that farthest along. Even as it is being flight tested, the Woburn, Mass., maker says it is still perfecting the design. No specific production date has been announced.
