2 men ejected from vehicle in single


CLIFTON - Two backseat passengers were ejected in a one-car crash on the Parkway and one remains hospitalized in critical condition, State Police said.


The crash occurred at 4:25 this morning when the driver of a silver Pontiac Grand Am ran off the left side of the Parkway southbound, reentered the road, rolled and then crash near milepost 154.7 in Clifton, State Police spokesman Sgt. Adam Grossman said.


The two backseat passengers, Joel Mercado of Plainfield and Khalil Pereira of North Plainfield, were ejected from the vehicle, Grossman said. Both men were not wearing seat belts, he confirmed.


Both men were transported to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson where Pereira, 18, remains in critical condition, according to Grossman. Mercado, 19, suffered non-life threatening injuries.


The driver, Joseph Almeida, 18, of North Plainfieild, was treated for complaints of pain, Grossman said. It is unknown whether Almeida was wearing a seat belt, he added.


The crash is under investigation by State Police.
