Report: HTC One Max due in September to challenge Samsung's Galaxy Note 3

Fall is shaping up to be a big season for large smartphones as HTC will reportedly debut a 6-inch version of its HTC One in September. Dubbed the HTC One Max, the Android handset could arrive at the same time as Samsung's expected Galaxy Note 3 and several other near-tablet-sized phones from Sony and LG. In addition to the large displays, all of these are expected to use the same chip inside.

MobileGeeks found out about the HTC One Max through its sources; the site's owner, Sascha Pallenberg, is based in Taiwan where many of today's smartphones and their parts are designed or built. Pallenberg says the HTC One Max will have a 6-inch 1080p Super LCD 3 display, 2 GB of memory, either 32 GB or 64 GB of internal storage and a 3200 mAh battery. A 2.3 GHz Snapdragon 800 chip will power the Max.

Does that chip sound familiar? It should. It will also be inside the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, a 6.4 inch tablet/phone and in LG's Optimus G2, which is expected to debut on Aug. 7. Samsung builds its own chips but has often used Qualcomm's silicon for devices with LTE support, so it there's a 50-50 chance the Snapdragon 800 will be in the Galaxy Note 3.

Regardless of what's inside, the outsides of all these devices are large. HTC has stayed out of the "phablet" market that Samsung started with the original Galaxy Note, but it appears ready to test the waters. If the device is as good as the currently available HTC One handset, the One Max could be a contender.
